Print vs Digital Design: Key Differences Every Business Should Know

Why the Difference Matters

Many businesses assume that design is design — that a brochure layout can be repurposed for a website with minimal adjustment, or that a social media graphic can be scaled up for a billboard. This assumption leads to blurry print materials, slow-loading websites, and inconsistent brand experiences across channels.

The reality is that print and digital design operate under fundamentally different constraints. Print is fixed, tactile, and viewed under varied lighting conditions. Digital is interactive, dynamic, and viewed on screens with vastly different resolutions and sizes. Understanding these differences is essential for any business that wants to maintain professional quality across all their marketing materials.

Colour: CMYK vs RGB

This is the most fundamental technical difference between print and digital design.

Print uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black): This is a subtractive colour model where ink is layered on paper. The range of colours that CMYK can reproduce is smaller than what the human eye can see, which is why some bright digital colours — like vibrant neon greens or electric blues — cannot be accurately reproduced in print.

Digital uses RGB (Red, Green, Blue): This is an additive colour model where light creates colour on a screen. RGB has a much wider gamut than CMYK, which means you can achieve brighter, more saturated colours on screen than in print.

Important: Always design in the colour mode appropriate for your final output. If you're creating something that will be both printed and used digitally, design the print version first in CMYK, then convert to RGB for digital. Converting from RGB to CMYK can cause significant colour shifts — bright blues can turn muddy purple, and vibrant greens can become dull olive.

Resolution: DPI vs PPI

Resolution requirements differ dramatically between print and digital:

Using a low-resolution image from the web (72 PPI) in a printed brochure will result in a pixelated, unprofessional result. Similarly, using a print-resolution image (300 DPI) on a website will create unnecessarily large file sizes that slow down page load times and hurt your SEO.

Typography: Serif vs Sans-Serif

Print typography has centuries of tradition behind it. Serif fonts (like Times New Roman, Garamond, or Baskerville) were designed specifically for print readability — the small decorative strokes guide the eye along lines of text. Print also allows for finer control over kerning, ligatures, and hyphenation, resulting in more polished typesetting.

Digital typography requires different considerations. Sans-serif fonts (like Inter, Open Sans, or Roboto) are generally more readable on screens because their simpler shapes render better at lower resolutions. Web fonts must be optimised for fast loading, and text must remain readable across different screen sizes, zoom levels, and operating systems.

Layout: Fixed vs Responsive

In print, the layout is fixed. A brochure has a specific size and every element has a specific position. What you see in the design file is exactly what the final printed piece will look like.

In digital, layouts must be responsive. Your website design must work on a 27-inch desktop monitor, a 14-inch laptop, a 10-inch tablet, and a 6-inch phone. This means flexible grids, responsive images, and content that reflows naturally across breakpoints. A fixed-width digital design that looks perfect on your designer's monitor might be unusable on mobile.

File Formats and Deliverables

Print deliverables typically include:

  • Print-ready PDF with bleeds and crop marks
  • Native source files (AI, PSD, INDD)
  • Vector logos (AI, EPS) for future scaling
  • Spot colour references (Pantone) for brand consistency

Digital deliverables typically include:

  • Optimised JPG and PNG files for web use
  • SVG for logos and icons (resolution-independent, small file size)
  • WebP for next-generation image optimisation
  • Source files in Figma, Sketch, or XD
